I didn't know you could make school uniform out of plastic bottles. That's really cool.
Firstly i would like to say, I am honoured to be the first person to be blogging for the David Luke website – hopefully the first of many. For this blog I am going to share my experience of the annual Schools Sustainability Conference held at St Christopher’s School in Accrington on 7th/8th July 2015. David Luke had a small but information packed space to share what we do with around 300 eager, school children.
Along with our stand, there were a variety of other interesting people and organisations; lots of animals as always (note the naked RATS, my favourite. I almost adopted one !) Fairtrade, a controversial fracking/anti-nuclear group, energy groups, forest protection and of course our partners Eco Schools England. It was great to see so many pupils engaged and animated about Eco in general and having a deep rooted respect for what their schools are trying to achieve.
I also enjoyed meeting some teachers from other schools, hoping to take back the message and implement it into their own school ethos. The workshops and visiting speakers clearly added to the success of the day too.
The ‘Trashion Show’ we sponsored was brilliant – the ideas and outfits were well thought out. The winners of the £100 voucher was St Bede’s Catholic School and Broughton CE primary school.
My genuine reaction following the event and certainly when trying to begin to summarise it, was simply ‘Wow…what a day!’ I did feel it was a privilege for David Luke to be a part of this event.
St Christopher’s is clearly a fantastic example of an Ambassador Eco School! Glynis who organised it did a fab job and I look forward to trying her homemade MARMALADE thank you gift! A lovely touch.

Having David Luke showcasing its commitment to education for sustainability over the 2 day event was most beneficial. Both primary school pupils and high school students were intrigued to know how many plastic bottles it takes to make up part of some of the David Luke items of Eco uniform. We welcomed the company sponsoring the up-cycled garment competition each day too and St Bede’s Catholic school and Broughton CE primary school both approached the competition as a group activity and were well deserved winners.
Using recycled plastic bottles to make the Eco-fabric for the blazers is a fantastic way to demonstrate to children how products can go on to become something entirely different through the process of recycling. Students are proud to wear their uniforms. Headteacher, Newport Free Grammar School
